First Step Toward Better Living

The business started at our primary home in 2016 in 372342 Quarter Townline, Tillsonburg, Ontario N4G 4H1. We started with less than six residents offering the same services we currently offer, at a relatively smaller scale. We were licensed by the Organization Of Retirement Community Association (ORCA) at the time.

Most of the seniors don’t like the institutional style settings which is the most common in the neighborhood and community around us. Most seniors prefer to be in their homes to avoid being in an institutional environment and setting which results in isolation, boredom and sometimes abuse by trusted relatives or caregivers.

Our home provides security by qualified staff, and supervision by two or more managers to make sure that seniors are being cared for appropriately by qualified professionals. They are also able to socialize with like-minded seniors of their age group with similar experiences to share and lifestyles. This also allows them to make friends and acquaintances as well as engage in a variety of activities together.

The business was launched because we saw the need for seniors who need assisted living in a smaller home-style setting.

We organize social events such as celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones for the seniors. The celebrations are inclusive of family and relatives, caregivers, and other friends to share the occasion.

Demography

In our community, we have bigger retirement homes that are well-established and operating on a larger scale. We provide similar services on a relatively small scale. This has given us competitive advantage as highlighted below:

The community comprised of low income seniors with limited access to any source of income beyond the basic Canadian Pension Protection (CPP)  and the Old Age Security (OAS) benefit.

One of the key problems is that, at old age, most of the seniors are transferred into the public institutional setting, which often does not provide for personalized care and services that they would have wanted.

To this extent, we have been able to differentiate our services by being the go-to place for seniors who want to experience personalized quality of care and continue to live within the community, without having to relocate to a far place institutional setting outside of their local community which they have been used to over the years.

One of the ways we demonstrate care and flexibility is in the pricing of our services. We work with the residents based on their monthly income as most of them have access only to their CPP and Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) pensions.

The ambiance of our care services is designed to provide a home-like setting and feel in an environment where they can socialize, engage, and still have a communal living without living in an isolated home or institutional setting where people feel they are being treated based on numbers.

For example, we give residents their pills on the table before or during their meal; while in an institution, they have to line up to receive their pills. This could create an uncomfortable experience, especially for seniors facing mobility and standing challenges.
